Burna releases his new album Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu Rex, known professionally as Burna Boy, today released his anticipated studio album to the delight of the awaiting fans who wasted no time in getting the album from all digital platforms making the work to earn a staggering 5 million+ downloads from audiomack only within 30 mins of release.
The Nigerian singer-songwriter’s fifth album is out this Friday (Aug. 14) and features Stormzy and Coldplay’s Chris Martin among the 15-song tracklist. The collection follows last year’s Grammy-nominated African Giant. “Twice As Tall” is executive-produced by Diddy, Bosede Ogulu, and Burna Boy. The record includes recent single Wonderful, while production includes contributions from Nigeria’s Spaceship Collective, Mike Dean, Telz, Timbaland, Jae5, and more.
Since the release, there has been positive response from a list artistes both on the local scene and diaspora such as Jaywon , Diddy, Black coffee and so on despite Burns’s failure to deliver the studio work in July as he promised at first which was also the case with Whizkid and Davido who also reintrated their decision of releasing their respective albums last month .
Mostly recorded in Lagos during lockdown, the record is described in a press release as “a beautiful mélange of sounds… a pure, unapologetic African body of work that boasts of a global contemporary sound that is for everyone.” The intro to the album is a voice of a grown man who was advising his son (Burna) on the perserverance and sacrifice needed to reach the ‘legend’ status . This was served with an animated visual which explains Burna’s meteoric rise into “greatness” and the behind the scenes hardwork which serve as key to his success .

Burna Boy rose to prominence in 2012 after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album. He later signed with the US’ Bad Habit/Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group globally. ‘African Giant’ would later amass positive review globally, win the ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2019 AFRIMA, and get nominated for ‘Best World Music Album’ at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. With the new height of Burna now twice as tall , it is safe to say Africans are now well represented on the music map in the global music scene and the Grammy award won’t be far fetched in the coming years .
